Because of this, the most abundant mineral in the earth’s crust is silica (silicon dioxide). The two most common elements in the earth’s crust are oxygen (46%) and silicon (28%). The earth is full of a wide variety of rocks and minerals which provides the soil to grow vegetation and support life. Science Lesson: The Four Elements in Everyday Life First Element: Earth For example, water at room temperature is a liquid whereas a rock at room temperature is solid. Of course, the temperature at which a matter is a solid or a liquid depends on what substance the matter is made of. ![]() As a general rule of thumb, the colder the matter is, the closer the atoms are to each other, and the warmer the matter is, the farther the atoms are apart. Temperature plays an important role in how the atoms are aligned in a substance. Examples of plasmas include lightning, solar wind, the sun, fluorescent lights, and neon signs. Plasmas are able to carry an electrical current and generate magnetic fields. In a plasma, the atoms are spaced similarly to gas except there is so much energy in a plasma, the atoms actually split into smaller pieces.Examples of gases are oxygen and nitrogen (in the air we breathe), helium, and steam (water vapor). The atoms can move so freely that if the gas is not trapped in a container, the atoms will diffuse and spread throughout the atmosphere. In a gas, there is more space between atoms.Examples of liquids include room temperature water, room temperature mercury, and hot lava (molten rock). This allows a liquid to take the shape of whatever container it is placed in. In a liquid, the atoms are close together but can move around each other.Examples of solids include rocks, wood, metal, and ice. In a solid, the atoms are packed closely together in an ordered pattern and cannot move, giving a solid a definite volume and shape. How atoms are arranged in an object determines whether it is a solid, liquid, gas, or plasma. (Click here to learn more about bonding.) Mass is how much matter is in an object whereas volume is how much space the object takes up. Bonding occurs among atoms to make larger molecules. Matter is anything that has mass and volume and is made up of atoms, which are the smallest particles of matter. ![]() This is similar to what really happens with elements and all molecules at an atomic level. While we do know now that these previous theories are false, in a way the four elements do align with the four states of matter that modern science has agreed on: solid (earth), liquid (water), gas (air), and plasma (fire).Īlthough the Greeks believed that the four elements were unchanging in nature, everything was made up of different elements, which were held together or pushed apart by forces of attraction and repulsion, causing substances to appear to change. These theories stated that the temperaments and humors needed to be in balance with each other in order for a person to be well both mentally and physically. The four elements were even used to described the four temperaments a person could have, and Hippocrates used the four elements to describe the four “humors” found in the body. Every visible thing was made up of some combination of earth, water, air, and fire. The elements were “pure” but could not be found in that state on earth. The idea that these four elements – earth, water, air, and fire – made up all matter was the cornerstone of philosophy, science, and medicine for two thousand years ( kids love to ask questions on the elements). He would be surprised to learn that they are in fact made up of many elements found on earth, and are so hot they could be said to be on fire all the time!) (Aristotle also suggested that there was a fifth element, aether, because it seemed strange that the stars would be made out of earthly elements. This theory was suggested around 450 BC, and it was later supported and added to by Aristotle. The ancient Greeks believed that there were four elements that everything was made up of: earth, water, air, and fire. What are the FOUR Elements? They emptied their entire supply of ammunition into the car, firing about 130 rounds in all. One of the officers recounted hearing Bonnie scream as she realized he’d been hit. Clyde was killed instantly by a shot to the head. Then, before they had time to get out of the car, the police officers opened fire. They pulled over, presumably to ask him for help. Upon seeing Methvin’s father parked on the side of the road, Bonnie and Clyde took the bait. on May 23, the police saw Clyde’s stolen Ford V8 speeding down the road. Back in November 1933, a Dallas grand jury had issued a warrant for their arrest. In the months leading up to the ambush, the authorities had heavily intensified their focus on the duo. They were ready to take out Bonnie and Clyde for good. On the evening of May 21, 1934, a posse of six police officers from Texas and Louisiana set up an ambush on a rural road in Bienville Parish, Louisiana. And the authorities were hot on their trail. ![]() Clyde was a “notorious Texas ‘bad man’ and murderer” and Bonnie was “his cigar-smoking, quick-shooting woman accomplice.”Īfter two years on the run, Bonnie and Clyde had killed at least 13 people. Papers like The New York Times described the duo in provocative terms. A later investigation of the crime scene turned up a camera full of pictures of the couple, which swiftly ran in newspapers across the country. And he took Bonnie with him.īy 1933, Bonnie and Clyde had become quite infamous for their crimes - especially after a shootout in Joplin, Missouri left two police officers dead. After one of his accomplices killed a store owner in 1932, Clyde decided to go on the run. But before long, Clyde’s crimes began to escalate. Soon afterward, their life of crime began in earnest, as the duo started committing several robberies together. Wikimedia Commons This photo of Bonnie Parker cemented her as Clyde’s cigar-smoking sidekick to the American public. Less than 20 dBZ indicates mist, dust, and other small particles. Values of dBZ vary dramatically based on the size, number, shape, and state (liquid or frozen) of targets. Reflectivity imagery is used to assess the location, areal coverage, intensity, general motion, and evolution of weather features such as discrete thunderstorms, thunderstorm clusters, squall lines, tornados, waterspouts, and hurricanes. Reflectivity, measured in dBZ, is the amount of energy that is backscattered by targets and is related to the precipitation rate (how hard it’s raining) of the storm. Let’s take a look at the two most common types of radar imagery.ĭoppler Weather Radar Imagery – Reflectivity By detecting this change in frequency – the Doppler Shift - the station can determine if the object is moving toward or away from the station, and the speed at which it is moving. (Upgrades over the past few years have improved the system’s ability to discern between dust, insects, raindrops, etc.) While the wavelength of the backscattered pulse doesn’t change as it travels through the atmosphere, its frequency shifts based on its motion relative to the radar station. ![]() (Click image for a larger version.)Ī wealth of useful information is derived from the backscattered pulses, such as the target’s direction and distance from the station, its height above the ground, its shape, and other physical characteristics. ![]() Figure 3: Base reflectivity image from KBUF (Buffalo, New York) with range rings and radials. ![]() USP7 binds oncogenic targets and controls gene expression through stabilization of NOTCH1 and JMJD3 and ultimately H3K27me3 changes. We demonstrate that ubiquitin-specific protease 7 (USP7) interacts with NOTCH1 and controls leukemia growth by stabilizing the levels of NOTCH1 and JMJD3 histone demethylase. To identify and characterize new NOTCH1 druggable partners in T-ALL, we coupled studies of the NOTCH1 interactome to expression analysis and a series of functional analyses in cell lines, patient samples, and xenograft models. Our goal in this work has been to identify enzymes active in T-ALL whose activity could be targeted for therapeutic purposes. Would this make it more efficient to simply build more rooms, even with that additional expense?įirst off, I know similar questions have been asked before however, they usually don't really mention what I am looking for specifically (efficiency). Coupled with the upgrade bonus, would this make it worth it to simply upgrade before building more?Īdditionally, at least in the beginning, it is difficult to store up enough caps to actually upgrade due to expense. However, it does get more expensive to build rooms the more of one that there is. It seems that building more rooms might be better as it would probably get more in the long run (two rooms vs one) even with the bonus of upgrading. I'm trying to quickly build up a solid base of the first three and wondering what the most efficient method is between upgrading (3 rooms) and building (3 rooms). ![]() The main reason I'm wondering is that in my vault I'm going for 3 layers of the following (power, food, water), followed by several layers of med/rad labs for mass-storage purposes, training rooms, etc. I am trying to figure out what will get the best return on investment right away. I am wondering which is more efficient in the beginning: building new rooms (production specifically) or upgrading existing rooms? Assume that the rooms are already three wide and that I would (obviously) be upgrading them all at the same time. ![]() Connecting the two is Ada’s romance with Souleiman, one of the aforementioned workers, who’s among a group of them to set sail in the middle of the night for Spain.
